Isle of Wight – Day One
We departed school a little later than expected due to unforeseen traffic around the Southampton area, however, with the wind behind us we arrived at the ferry in good time. The children enjoyed using their trip diaries to spot boats and wildlife on our trip across the Solent. After a quick coach trip to Carisbrooke Castle, we picnicked in the grounds and then separated into four groups to walk around the castle. The children enjoyed learning about King Charles I imprisonment; seeing the views from the balustrade and in particular watching Jack the donkey turn the water wheel.
After a snack to see them through to evening and a short journey we arrived at Shanklin Theatre for our afternoon workshop: the children had the opportunity to dance and sing on stage, dress up and present a show. They learnt about how the lighting was arranged, how the microphones worked and make-up – a particular highlight was watching themselves back on the big screen and listening to the teacher’s voices sounding funny after sound effects were applied.
We departed the theatre at half-past six and on arriving at Totland Bay we were served with baked potatoes and salad or a large helping of pasta bolognese followed by ice-cream. Shortly after it was time for bed in preparation for tomorrow.
