Intent

Through our Physical Education (PE) curriculum our aim is that PE should be experienced in a safe and supportive environment to ensure that children achieve optimum physical development, good health and have fun! We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities through following a carefully sequenced progression of skills and a wide variety of PE opportunities. We are passionate about teaching children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding equity and fairness of play and embedding these life-long values.

Our curriculum aims to improve the health and fitness of all children at The Schools of Woolton Hill, through the sporting skills taught as well as through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. We aim for all children to have opportunities to take part in competition, through PE lessons, inter house tournaments and a wide range of sports competitions against local schools.

Implementation

At The Schools of Woolton Hill we provide PE lessons which offer challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventurous education. Skills are built on progressively from Year R to Year 6 through PE lessons planned using ‘The Power of PE’ scheme of work. The scheme promotes a love of PE by developing children’s hearts and minds through physical activity.

The Schools of Woolton Hill long term map sets out the PE topics which are taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities, sporting clubs and regular sports competitions as part of the Park House group.

Impact

Formative assessment in PE takes place during each lesson. Oral feedback is provided to children, related to the learning objective or skill being taught that lesson. Time is dedicated to supporting all children to achieve the skills in the lessons and then apply them to games. Children at The Schools of Woolton Hill learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports.

The teaching of PE is monitored regularly, through planning monitoring and learning walks. This information is used to identify strengths and areas for development of the subject, driving the subject forward.

Our children thoroughly enjoy PE across the school. This is evident from regular monitoring and consulting with the children in each year group. Teachers have high expectations and have developed confidence with teaching PE through the structure and support materials offered by ‘The Power of PE’ scheme, coaching development opportunities and the expertise and passion of our staff team.
